THE ARTIST OF THE MONTH IN OCTOBER MINNA SALONEN
The exhibition is based on the artist’s experiences of abandoned houses, which also formed the subject of her Master’s thesis in Visual Arts. In front of the Artist of the Month display, there is a table and chairs. Behind the table and chairs is a large panel designed to resemble an old, wallpapered wall, displaying a selection of paintings.
A wasp nest has fallen onto the table. The exhibition has a surreal quality, inspired by the kinds of feelings that abandoned houses, with their strange combinations of objects, evoke in the artist. The walls feature paintings inspired by abandoned houses, while the table holds a wasp nest made from plaster bandage, with wasps sculpted from air-drying clay.
Minna Salonen holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts and works with painting, three-dimensional painting, and installation. In her art, Salonen explores the passage of time and the ways in which it becomes visible both in people and in their surroundings. More broadly, the immediate environment is an essential and meaningful part of her artistic practice.
