14:30–17:00 Kurikka Grand Canyon Painting Workshop 1 with Petri Ala-Maunus

This workshop explores deep time and the history of the Earth through creative work. The starting point is Kurikka’s unique geological history and the so-called Kurikka Grand Canyon, which has been described as the world’s oldest valley. Participants will paint their own vision of the ancient world: what kinds of mountains, seas, landscapes, or life forms might have existed here 1.5 billion years ago.

Register via the Netticket service and pay the materials fee in advance. No prior painting experience is required. You can come with a friend, family member, or other acquaintance and spend a relaxing afternoon painting together! In this workshop, you’ll paint your own vision and interpretation of a prehistoric landscape under the guidance of artist Petri Ala-Maunus. You’ll take your painting home with you after the workshop to let it dry.

17:00–18:00 Guided tour: Tell Me About the Beginning of Time

This guided tour explores the “The Contamination of Time” exhibition at the Seinäjoki Kunsthalle with Niko Putkinen. The tour is open to everyone and free of charge.

Niko Putkinen is a senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). Putkinen’s research focuses on the impact of present-day and past climate change on glacial dynamics—that is, the movement of glaciers. What thoughts does the “Pollution of Time” exhibition evoke in the researcher? The works in the exhibition invite us to examine time and our influence on it. They demonstrate how the distant past and future imperceptibly shape our everyday lives. How does studying deep time help us understand our present and our hopes for the future?

Afterwork event in December, features Independence Day pre-celebrations! Throughout the day, the Kalevan Navetta’s organizations will host workshops and performing arts programs suitable for a variety of audiences. More detailed program information will be released during the fall of 2026.
